About this qualification
This course is designed to train Breastfeeding Counsellors and Educators, Child Care and Peer Support Workers to provide breastfeeding support and education services to mothers and the community It will provide participants with a range of knowledge and skills to perform the following functions
* Promote and protect breastfeeding * Maintain compliance with legal and ethical standards, boundaries of practice and referral processes applying to the provision of peer-based breastfeeding support * Communicate effectively with mothers in a range of cultural contexts * Deliver breastfeeding education programs to a range of audiences * Promote and establish breastfeeding friendly environments in a range of situations * Take breastfeeding histories and guide mothers to evaluate the mother-infant breastfeeding dyad * Guide mothers about the establishment, maintenance and cessation of breastfeeding, normal infant behaviours and the introduction of family foods * Assist mothers with the resolution of breastfeeding problems * Support mothers to adjust to life changes associated with breastfeeding * Work collaboratively with colleagues to provide breastfeeding support services
