About this qualification

Here is what the Bachelor of Hospitality Management qualification offered by Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE covers and who it is designed for.

Turn your passion for professional service into a global career. The growth of global tourism has ensured that hospitality is now one of the world’s biggest industries with a broad range of job opportunities available in every country. A career in hospitality offers you both choice and security.

Featuring one of the most comprehensive practical training components in Australia, the Bachelor of Hospitality Management represents the next generation in hospitality qualifications. When you graduate from this degree you will possess the perfect blend of practical skill, theory and business acumen to take you to the top of your profession.

The Bachelor of Hospitality Management offers:

26 subjects in total

  • 12 core business subjects
  • 8 specialisation subjects
  • 4 elective subjects
  • 2 WIL (Work Integrated Learning) subjects

Work Integrated Learning (WIL) subjects are built into your degree, meaning you’ll have an organised professional placement as part of your degree.

Our impressive network of hospitality industry partners provides invaluable industry insight and experience, helping shape our qualifications to ensure they are in line with industry best practice. When it is time to embark on your industry training, we work closely with these partners to find a suitable host organisation that is the best fit for your skills, interests and professional goals.

Your industry training could take you to a major city, regional area or island resort in Australia, or an international city. Not only is this an invaluable experience, but it is also a chance to grow your professional network. For many of our graduates this experience introduces them to their future employers.

While theory teaches you the hospitality management fundamentals, nothing is as valuable as putting theory into practice. In addition to your industry training, you’ll gain hands-on experience through practical classes. You’ll also manage large-scale events with real clients and work in the Grand Dining Room (our on-campus training restaurant) and in the production kitchen. Field trips and site visits with our industry partners will get you learning from the best in the business.

The Bachelor of Hospitality Management is industry-focused and aims to develop contemporary knowledge and skills needed for success. This means:

  • real-world assessments: no exams
  • hospitality industry relationships
  • everybody gets to complete a work placement in an organisation that aligns to their preferred industry
  • access to personal study assistance and wellness support
  • an emphasis on professionalism which includes: business cards, interview preparation, wearing business attire in class, setting up LinkedIn profiles, access to the Careers Hub, mentoring from high-achieving students and alumni, working on your CV with your Work Integrated Learning consultant.

In your final year of the Bachelor of Hospitality Management, you will have the opportunity to participate in a ‘capstone’ subject to test your abilities in addressing contemporary issues or problems in the area in which you may forge a successful career.
