Bachelor of Mathematical Sciences pathway to Honours

Gain a foundation in the principles and techniques of modern mathematics and learn how to apply these skills to solve today's problems. The Bachelor of Mathematical Sciences pathway to Honours prepares graduates for employment in a wide range of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematic (STEM) industries. Graduates working in mathematics can apply for accreditation from the Australian Mathematical Society, while graduates working in statistics can apply for accreditation from the Statistical Society of Australia. Students completing this degree will have the opportunity to undertake a one year honours degree in the fourth year.

The Bachelor of Mathematical Sciences pathway to Honours has been designed to provide graduates with a strong foundation in both the theoretical and the practical aspects of applied mathematics and statistics and the ability to critically analyse and evaluate mathematical and statistical information, to create models and solve problems.

Practical experience

This degree provides graduates with practical experience that prepares them for the workforce. Students will undertake an industry placement with a company or organisation working on a real problem using mathematics or statistics skills learnt throughout the degree.

Your career

On completion of the degree students will be able to proficiently use mathematical skills and knowledge to analyse and systematically develop complex systems and develop mathematical solutions that address problems arising from a variety of social, political, international, economic and environmental contexts. Students will also be able to apply research skills appropriate to postgraduate research or advanced industrial investigation.

Potential occupations include jobs such as statistician, analytics officer, defence scientist, fraud analyst, artificial intelligence developer and mathematician. Graduates can seek employment at businesses such as banks and accountancy firms, tech companies and the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
