About this qualification

Here is what the Bachelor of Medical Science (Accelerated) qualification offered by University of the Sunshine Coast covers and who it is designed for.

The Bachelor of Medical Science (Accelerated) enables high-capacity individuals to complete the Bachelor of Medical Science studies in two and a half years instead of the traditional three year timeframe. It is designed to give you the knowledge base and skills to enter the health and medical science workforce, continue with a research higher degree or the opportunity to continue with other health related degrees. As you progress through the degree, you will have the choice to specialise in a range of areas such as biochemistry, biotechnology, microbiology, molecular biology, neuroscience and more.

This is an innovative and flexible degree providing exciting options for moving into a range of careers in the areas of medical science and research. It offers specialised study for those seeking to work as medical science professionals in such areas as microbiology, molecular medicine, physiology and anatomy, neuroscience, pharmacology and toxicology. It also provides an appropriate basis for postgraduate studies in allied health fields such as speech pathology and audiology.

There are five majors available within this degree: Health & Medical Research, Immunology & Infectious Diseases, Molecular Medicine & Physiology, Neuroscience & Anatomy and Medical Studies. Pursue one of these majors to explore an area of specialised interest and focus your future career, or choose your own adventure and discover areas you're particularly passionate about as you study.

Also available is the Bachelor of Medical Science (SATAC code 214421) which can be completed in 3 years full-time or equivalent part-time, the Bachelor of Medical Science (Honours) (SATAC code 244891) which is a 4-year degree that includes an honours year, or the Bachelor of Medical Science (Laboratory Medicine) (SATAC code 244581) which will also take four years to complete as it involves a full year of placement in the final year and covers areas such as haematology and transfusion science, microbiology, genetics, immunology, virology and more.

Practical experience

This degree provides students with practical experience that prepares them for the workforce. Students will undertake a professional placement in their third year of study, developing hands-on experience in a laboratory setting and important practical skills that enhance their employability.
