Get equipped with the essential skills to provide high quality, safe and effective woman-centred care. With a focus on the principles of primary health care and continuity of care, the Bachelor of Midwifery (Pre-registration) will help you to develop an understanding of various midwifery models and enable you to apply theory and skills in your daily practice. Graduates will be adaptable to different models of care and contexts of practice and will be able to respond to changing health care needs and consumer demands.
It has been designed for applicants with no previous formal midwifery qualifications and/or enrolled nurses who would like to become eligible to apply to the Australian Heath Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia as a Registered Midwife.
Applicants who are Registered Nurses and hold a current practising certificate should apply through the SATAC postgraduate application service for entry into the Bachelor of Midwifery (Registered Nurse Entry) (SATAC code 2BP001).
City Campus
Flinders City Campus offers a broad range of study areas and is designed for collaborative learning, interactive teaching and industry engagement. Positioned adjacent to the Adelaide Railway Station on North Terrace and central to trams and buses, the City Campus provides students with greater connection, convenience and accessibility.
Practical experience
This degree provides students with the knowledge, skills and experience necessary for them to demonstrate midwifery competencies and practise as registered midwives at the completion of the degree. Students will be required to undertake 29 weeks of placement across the three year degree in agencies and hospitals across South Australia. Professional experience placements will include morning, afternoon, night, weekend and public holiday shifts and may be rostered at any time in the calendar year. Students must be able to undertake full-time block placements of up to six weeks in length and be prepared to undertake placements in rural venues.
The Continuity of Care Experience will require students to provide care for individual women throughout their pregnancy and labour and in the post-natal period. This will require availability to attend appointments and be on-call for births.
Applicants are advised that midwifery is a profession that places considerable academic, physical and psychological demands on the individual. Prospective students who intend to apply for this degree should carefully check that they meet the requirements listed in the Inherent Course Requirements.
Under the terms of the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law (South Australia) Act 2010, Nursing and Midwifery students enrolled in a degree that provides a qualification for registration are required (as a condition of their enrolment at the University) to be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia for the duration of their Nursing/Midwifery studies. Students will be registered for the duration of study or clinical training, or until they are no longer enrolled in an approved degree.
Equal Consideration
Equal consideration is a central principle of the admissions process. Equal consideration means that all applicants who have the same selection rank for a degree (or a subquota within a degree) are treated equally i.e. either all or none will be entitled to an offer, provided application deadlines and other application requirements are met by the set deadline.
Applicants who lodge an application by the relevant closing date and comply with all the application requirements, including having all grades/results by the required deadline, will be guaranteed equal consideration in the selection process. If however, an application is lodged late or does not comply with all the application requirements, including having all grades/results by the required deadline, the applicant will not be guaranteed equal consideration.
Applicants who have applied on time but shuffle this preference after the Change of Preference deadline will not be guaranteed equal consideration. Applicants who have applied on time will be required to have all pending or missing grades and/or adjustment factors finalised no later than 31 December 2026 to be guaranteed equal consideration.
Applicants are advised that should they receive an offer for a place in this degree, they will be required to enrol in topics by the enrolment deadline stated in the letter of offer from SATAC. If they do not enrol via the Flinders University Student System by the specified date and maintain enrolment, their offer in the degree will be forfeit. Applicants who receive an offer for a place in this degree should also note that if they subsequently receive an offer to a higher preference, their offer will be deemed superseded and will be forfeited.
