This subject will employ experiential learning principles through nested and authentic assessments. This will give you the opportunity to learn research methods in a sequential manner and receive focused feedback, thereby increasing confidence to use your research skills in future professional roles. From the first week you will be placed in research teams to enable collaboration and support across the subject. In groups, you will begin by developing your skills in identifying a problem, developing a research question and objective, and designing a review protocol to locate, appraise and extract information from relevant high-quality sources. Next, you will conduct a search and synthesise findings in a transparent scientific format whereby you practice the skills of narrative and tabular summaries. Subsequently, you will be exposed to data and gain basic statistical knowledge needed to prepare a data report and contextualise your findings within the broader literature. Finally, student research teams will take part in a group poster presentation whereby the findings from across the semester are summarised and contextualised. You will have the chance to identify future research cycle improvements and reflect on your work across the semester. Additionally, members of the La Trobe research community will present their work to demonstrate practical applications of research skills relevant to health professionals.
