This is an introductory subject examining the acquisition of language knowledge and skills of young children. The unit addresses the teaching of English across the early years of life and schooling. A specific focus will be placed on understanding the acquisition and interrelationships of language modes – reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing and creating- and applying metalinguistic terms associated with these modes. Students will learn to design and justify instructional strategies and assessments aligned with curriculum standards (ACARA and ACECQA) for young learners and critically examine and compare theoretical perspectives to inform practical teaching applications. Throughout the unit, emphasis will be placed on assessing young children’s learning using diverse data sources to make valid instructional decisions. This unit aims to prepare educators with a grounding in the knowledge and skills needed to foster contextually and culturally respective inclusive learning environments that honour young children as active, agential learners.
