Yet food security remains a global challenge, with millions of people facing food-related issues (e.g. chronic hunger, nutritional deficiencies), not only in low-income countries but also in higher-income countries, such as Australia. Evidence shows that food security is not merely about availability. Rather, it is complicated by sociocultural, economic, environmental and political contexts, including consumption patterns. Drawing on diverse examples and contexts, we will analyse the complex, interconnected challenges and opportunities affecting food security, nutrition, and the resilience of food systems. We will also explore food system transitions in action, which may enhance food security in different parts of the world. Finally, we will explore food system transformation, focusing on how to change how food systems operate to improve environmental, health, and livelihood outcomes for more sustainable and equitable futures.
