The effects of grief in terms of human suffering and the associated psychological costs of providing support are critical issues that will be addressed. This subject provides a holistic approach to grief and loss counselling. Students explore the various experiences and stages associated with the process of grieving. Students develop the required skills to work compassionately with people who suffer psychological fall-outs and face existential questions following a variety of losses. The multiple losses associated with aging, relationship change, physical and mental health problems, loss of role and identity challenges are analysed. Students will develop their understanding of death and dying including bereavement counselling, spiritual practice and end of life plans. Students learn the distinction between grief and complicated grief whilst recognizing and respecting the uniqueness of each client's experience.
