Rather than viewing current issues as isolated phenomena, students will trace the deep historical roots of problems that dominate public discourse today, developing critical analytical skills to understand how the past continues to shape present-day Australia. It is designed for history students as well as anyone who wishes to gain a greater understanding of contemporary Australian society. Each week, issues of topical importance are introduced and given an historical setting. We will use a wide range of media and primary sources, and engage with objects and documents in the Janet Gale Museum in the university. We will draw connections between the present and the past and consider the power of history to influence events today.
