About this subject
In Indigenous Knowledges in Health and Wellbeing we explore Indigenous models of health and wellbeing as applied to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Students critically examine how viewing health from holistic, Indigenous perspectives compares to a biomedical, Western model of health. Indigenous scholarship on health and wellbeing is introduced and students explore how research that is framed from Indigenous perspectives brings narratives of strength rather than deficit. We examine the seven domains (connection to Culture; Country; Family/Kinship; Body; Mind & Emotion; Spirit & Ancestors; and Community) of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Model of Social and Emotional Wellbeing as well as other Indigenous models of wellbeing. The role of social determinants of health, including settler colonialism and racism, are also explored. Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online.
