About this subject

This subject introduces the foundational concepts of human rights in social care practice. Students will explore the historical development of human rights and critically examine how these rights are influenced by dominant Western narratives. This analysis will address whose rights are prioritised, whose voices are heard, and how this impacts marginalised communities, particularly Indigenous peoples. Key themes covered include: Historical context of human rights; Global perspectives on rights and their interpretation across cultures, emphasising Indigenous viewpoints; Implications for social care practice, including culturally competent care, advocacy, and informed policy development. Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online.
