About this subject
Children’s literature is an important tool for exposing children to the moral, ethical and practical problems of the world in a way that is manageable and accessible for them. When you study this unit you will be introduced to the key elements of children’s literature, using case studies from children’s books, stories and poetry. You will gain an understanding of the range of concepts involved in analysing children’s texts, including the significance of the implied reader, the power of ideological contexts and the role of literature in childhood. You will explore a range of literary genres, techniques, and styles (including humour, fantasy and realism) in order to gain essential skills in reading, understanding and writing about literature.
