See CRICOS-registered alternativesLanguage and gender examines the many ways in which language both produces and reflects cultural understandings of gender, sex, and sexuality. In this subject, you will be introduced to different theoretical and methodological approaches of linguistics regarding gender, applying and critiquing these in context. The subject includes an examination of the relationship between language and sexualities. The focus is on both gendered language use and language about gender and sexualities. While the majority of existing literature focusses on English and countries such as the US and UK, we explore the application of current ideas beyond these societies, incorporating an intersectional perspective. This is a level 3 subject. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.
