Students will analyse theoretical perspectives and differing pedagogies underpinning teaching and learning of language and literacy. Students will examine research relating to a variety of teaching approaches to establish strong literacy learning environments that support children who are beginning to read and write. The subject highlights the linguistic and cultural backgrounds children and families bring to early learning environments and consider how learning environments for 3–5-year-olds can value individual, and cultural diversity in relation to home and school literacy practices. The subject will build on the students’ knowledge base about teaching, assessing and planning for language and literacy learning.
