These types of environments are commonplace in Australia and include individuals from multicultural and multilingual backgrounds. While this subject focuses on classroom contexts, it will also inform leadership practices in other environments consisting of individuals from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. A central premise of the unit is that sustaining environments are collaborative and include pedagogies which emerge from the capabilities of individuals. In particular, the subject aims to raise critical awareness of cultural and linguistic inclusivity in multilingual/multicultural spaces, show students how to get to know learners in their contexts through ethnographic and action research, and, with those understandings, learn to develop pedagogies and strategies for teaching English as an Additional Language/Dialect (EAL/D) to students in mainstream classes. This is achieved through three main modules of learning, formal assessments which connect with the community, and non-assessed tasks, which build capacity and scaffold learning.
