About this subject
This subject introduces you to some of the most important and fascinating ideas in modern politics. It examines a number of central questions that are at the heart of politics, and which underlie many of the major political controversies today: 1) whether the authority of the state is justified and the extent to which it should place limits on the freedom of the individual; 2) whether democracy is the best form of government; 3) whether inequality in the distribution of resources is unjust; and 4) how traditional frameworks for thinking about politics exclude or oppress particular groups. In exploring these questions, we examine a number of key ideologies that have shaped our thinking about these questions (for better and for worse), including liberalism, conservatism, democracy, populism, fascism, socialism, social democracy and Green political theory, along with key concepts such as gender, race, egalitarianism, meritocracy, and the social contract. Throughout the semester, we consider how contemporary politics reflects these concepts and debates. By the end of the semester, you should have a strong understanding of the key ideas shaping modern politics, the ability to identify how different ideological traditions have responded to these debates, and the ability to analyse and evaluate these ideas and perspectives. This is a level 2 subject. The subject includes a pre-recorded lecture each week along with a synchronous (i.e. "live") tutorial with the expectation of student attendance and participation.
