With attention to diversity and social justice, children’s rights to develop physical literacies within their personal, physical and socio-cultural contexts are explored, and relevant teaching and assessment approaches identified. Given the emphasis on evidence-based curriculum design and assessment practices, students will investigate the research that underpins the contemporary curriculum rationale and focus. The subject reviews ongoing, developmentally appropriate curriculum and assessment practices relating to health and movement, where children participate safely to develop the knowledge, skills, dispositions and understandings to make healthy and active choices for the wellbeing of themselves and others. In this regard, the importance of physical skills development in the primary years is addressed through in-depth study of theories and practices that inform developmentally appropriate PE curriculum design and sound assessment practices. The subject will also address the need for inclusivity in Physical Education curriculum and assessment as well as develop in students, practical ways of approaching inclusivity in planning and implementation of the curriculum, including management and safety issues.
