In this subject you will interrogate art, film and media from a range of time periods and cultural contexts to see how dominant concepts of the body and identity are communicated. From painting to protest, from film to fashion, you will look at examples of visual culture that have challenged convention and changed the way we understand our own and others’ bodies. Across the learning materials and in the weekly seminar you will engage critically with a range of visual and textual sources and formulate independent arguments across critical and creative tasks. This subject introduces you to key approaches in the study of visual cultures, and interdisciplinary knowledge relevant to range of other majors including History, Gender Sexuality and Diversity Studies, English, and Sociology. This is a level 1 subject and includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.
