But ‘Romantic’ has a special meaning in cultural history, where it names literature and art created around 1800 — the time of world revolution (in France, America, Haiti), industrialisation, abolition of slavery, and the colonisation of Australia. This subject examines literature from this turning point in world history together with critical material. It explores the Romantic ideas and practices that made literature and art the subject of a specifically modern passion, and it examines how these ideas were taken up by divergent literary voices including political radicals, proto-feminists, the formerly enslaved, American dreamers, and Australian settlers. In addition to the Big Six canonical Romantic poets, students will study writers such as Mary Wollstonecraft, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Mary Prince, and Walt Whitman. Students will recover the history behind what it means to love a poem, painting or song, and what it means to be a writer during a period of enormous social and political change.
