Mechanical / Engineering Management (Honours)
About this qualification
Take part in a combination that allows high-achieving students to complete a program which combines Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Management in only five years. You will learn to plan, design, build and maintain complex mechanical devices, with access to our purpose-built state-of-the-art teaching and laboratory facilities and heavy engineering pods at Tonsley. The Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) (Honours)/Master of Engineering Management is accredited by Engineers Australia at the level of professional engineer. Professional engineering courses accredited by Engineers Australia are recognised internationally under the Washington Accord. Graduates meet the academic requirements for attaining chartered professional engineering status.
This double degree has been designed to provide a strong understanding of both the theoretical and the practical aspects of engineering, particularly those relevant to the systematic development of mechanical engineering systems combining the technological problem-solving ability of engineering and other STEM disciplines with the organisational, administrative Planning abilities of business and management disciplines.
The Mechanical Engineering component of this course is a comprehensive, accredited degree providing both a theoretical and a real-world practical basis for designing and developing complex mechanical devices. Students will be able to specialise in one of five areas - Advanced Mechanical Engineering, Electro-Mechanical Systems, Materials Engineering, Maritime Engineering, and Advanced Manufacturing and Digital Design. The Engineering Management component combines the problem-solving and technical design ability of engineering with executive organisational skills and the planning power of business and management.
Nuclear Engineering Major
A Nuclear Engineering major is also offered in this degree. Nuclear engineering at Flinders University is offered through a tri-nation academic partnership between Flinders University (Australia), the University of Rhode Island (United States) and Manchester University (United Kingdom. An exchange option is available in the United States through a placement opportunity. Nuclear engineering topics are undertaken in intensive mode over 8 days in summer (January) and winter (July) from Year 2. To be eligible to study this major applicants must be an Australian citizen.
Practical experience
This degree provides students with the opportunity to gain first-hand industry experience with a 20-week industry placement as pa rt of their degree. One of the longest work placements offered in Australia, it enables students to work alongside professional engineers tackling real-world problems. This degree also includes the ability to undertake a substantial research-oriented project.
Your career
On completion of the Bachelor component, and subject to meeting minimum academic requirements, students will progress to the Masters component of the double degree where students will be provided with advanced-level theoretical aspects and the practical skills of professional engineering management that builds on a student's previous knowledge and experience.
The double degree aims to prepare graduates for a career as a professional engineer and have the skills and knowledge to manage complex mechanical engineering enterprises.
