About this subject
This subject examines the dramatic changes taking place across Asia in the contemporary period, with particular emphasis on the politics of media and popular culture in Indonesia, Japan, and China. We examine how values, identities, and politics are constructed and conveyed through a range of media, including film, popular music, and social media. We discuss the role of state cultural and media policies as well as the uses of media by social movements and political activists in the region and the political ramifications of ostensibly apolitical media. We also look at the political economy of media industries in the region, their impact on urban development and urban life, and the relationships between local, national, and transnational media cultures, as well as Australian relationships with Asian media. While it is not necessary for the subject, students with advanced competence in an Asian language will have the option of analysing examples of media in that language. Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online.
