From trot to K-pop, this subject traces the development of Korean popular music, cinema and other creative industries in Korea. The focus will be on examining the political, cultural, economic and social significance of creative industries in modern Korea, through examining global idol cultures, gaming and fandom communities, the world of South Korean cinema, TV dramas and webtoons, and the role screen cultures have played in Korean society in the past. This subject will also cover North Korean public and popular culture, focusing on the political and social importance of culture in North Korea. Through a range of interactive assessments, students gain advanced skills of critical cultural analysis, as well as an understanding of how culture intersects with national identity and international relations. This subject is taught in English, no prior knowledge of Korean language is required.
