By focusing on three of the most popular genres in the world: crime, romance and speculative fiction the subject examines how the style and focus of popular texts reflects shifting attitudes and tastes in society and culture. These popular genres are examined in a range of modes including fiction, television, film and a variety of screen based cultures. The subject develops a range of skills and knowledge that explore the relationship between written and screen-based texts and publishing in popular genres. Students should note that content referred to in this subject can be challenging or explicit when exploring genre intent, parameters and innovations.
